- Kenya
- Kanagawa University
- Q.
- Why did you decide to study in Japan?
- A.
- I first came to Japan under the MEXT scholarship program, a specialized training program to study mechanical engineering in three years. I honestly wanted to study abroad and it didn't really matter which place I went to as long as it gave me a promise of a better future. So when I heard about the MEXT scholarship, I tried my luck and one year later I came to Japan.
- Q.
- What was your best experience while studying in Japan?
- A.
- I’m thinking that it's the fact that my dreams grew enormously. Back in Kenya I just wanted to be successful enough in my community, and probably that was it. But when I came to Tokyo, I realized I could change my life . I realized the possibilities I had and that my future was as big as I imagined they would be. You either go big or go home. So I'd say it was a big eye-opener for me. I'm truly appreciative.
- Q.
- What is your favorite thing you found in Japan? Please tell us why.
- A.
- I like the Japanese culture. They are extremely hard-working people and they keep time. I personally have struggled with keeping time a lot and I think being in Japan has helped me a lot. They are also extremely helpful people and I am grateful for that.
- Q.
- What is the biggest lesson you learned while studying in Japan?
- A.
- Do not limit yourself. Being in such a society with so many opportunities has really helped me learn not to limit myself as a person. I have learned a bunch of new skills here. I picked up modelling and fashion that have helped me a lot. Being a self-sponsored student at the moment, you have to do what it takes to make ends meet and so for me, having a bunch of skills that I picked up in the previous years has been a truly tremendous thing. I still want to explore and learn new things. I think learning, unlearning and relearning new things helps you discover yourself and also definitely helps you create a deeper connection to your inner self.
- Q.
- What advice can you give to those who are thinking of studying in Japan?
- A.
- Why not? Take the step. It's a totally different place from other places but the experience here will prepare you to be able to survive anywhere out there. Just believe in yourself and take action.
